Netflix's Frankenstein Release Date, Trailer, First-Look Images, and Everything You Need to Know

Netflix's Frankenstein is coming, and after getting our first look at Guillermo del Toro's adaptation, we're realizing it's truly just Jacob Elordi's world, and we are all living in it. Two years after the worldwide takeover of Saltburn, the Australian actor stars in Guillermo del Toro's long-awaited Frankenstein adaptation, keeping his acting streak alive and well.

Based on Mary Shelley's famous 1818 novel of the same name, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein has been in the works for quite some time now. The Mexican director first started working on his vision of Frankenstein in 2008 to no avail. After being shelved for a while, Netflix picked the project back up in 2023 as part of a multi-year deal with del Toro, which produced the Oscar-winning stop-motion reimagining of Pinocchio as well as the anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities.

Though Andrew Garfield was first in talks for the semi-titular role, it seems like del Toro has finally found his final monster in the Saltburn and Euphoria star. As we prepare for the movie's arrival this year, here's everything we know about Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein so far — from its confirmed cast members to its release date and even some first-look pictures.

At Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event on Saturday, May 31, 2025, the world got to see the first teaser trailer of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. “This fall, only monsters play god," read the tagline of the teaser, which also unveils our first look at Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's Creature. “I recently had the great pleasure of playing The Creature," the Euphoria star said in a special video that aired at TUDUM. “I’m really proud of the work we all put into it.”

In the teaser trailer, which you can watch above, we get a peek at Victor Frankenstein's inspiration and process for bringing The Creature to life. “In seeking life, I created death,” the doctor proclaims as we see The Creature in action, creepily calling out for Victor.

Netflix released the first picture from Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein on January 30, 2025. It showed Oscar Isaac in character as the film's protagonist, Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Holding up a mysterious object, Frankenstein appears to be presenting a discovery to some erudites. In Mary Shelley's novel, he studied at the University of Ingolstadt, so the academic setting makes us even more curious. You can see the picture below:

On July 18, 2025, the streamer released a new set of photos, both from the movie and behind the scenes, giving us our first proper peek at an unrecognizable Jacob Elordi as The Creature, a.k.a. Frankenstein's monster.

The pictures also give us a glimpse of the Frankenstein family, showing Christian Convery as a young Victor, Mia Goth as Victor's wife-to-be Elizabeth, Felix Kammerer as his younger brother William Frankenstein, and Charles Dance as his stern father, Leopold Frankenstein. The pictures also show Christoph Waltz as Victor's patron Harlander, Sofia Galasso as a little girl, and David Bradley as the Blind Man. You can see them all below:

It has been officially confirmed that Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein movie will premiere on Netflix in November 2025, though a specific day is yet to be announced. Prior to its release on the streamer, Frankenstein will premiere at the Venice Film Festival and have a limited theatrical release.

It looks like Netflix's Frankenstein was in pre-production for most of 2023. In April, del Toro shared a picture where he announced the project was "one week into scouting."

In an interview with Collider, del Toro also revealed the project was slated to begin production around February 2024. "We start shooting in February, and it's a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it's basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn't have done 10 years ago. Now I'm brave or crazy enough or something, and we're gonna tackle it," he said at the time when Garfield was still attached to the project.

Speaking at a Netflix event on January 29, 2025, the director doubled down on the take, saying: “This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for fifty years. And I’ve been trying to make it for 20-25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein. And they probably would be right. You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this.”

A handful of names have been attached to Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. In 2023, it was reported that the project was eyeing Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth for its lead roles. However, according to a public notice posted by Netflix on January 8, 2024, the final cast for Netflix's Frankenstein will include Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and Felix Kammerer.

EW confirmed Oscar Isaac would play Dr. Victor Frankenstein, the scientist who builds the monster, while Elordi will step into the monster's shoes himself. According to Deadline, scheduling conflicts caused by strike delays are the reason Elordi has replaced Garfield in Frankenstein.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in July 2025, Guillermo del Toro revealed the team, led by makeup artist Mike Hill, only had nine weeks to nail the look on Elordi, having previously spent nine months crafting the look for Garfield.

“Andrew Garfield stepping out and Jacob coming in. I mean, it was like Jacob is the most perfect actor for The Creature,” del Toro said. “And we have a supernaturally good connection. It’s like, very few words. Very few things I have to say, and he does it… We recast, and we had nine weeks [to get the look down]. You can’t be under more pressure than that.”

“The thing about Jacob is, he just has everything rolled into one,” Hill added. “What attracted me to him was his gangliness and his wrists. It was this looseness. Then he has these real somber moments where he watches you really deftly, and his eyelids are low, with the long lashes like Karloff. I was like, ‘I don't know who else you could get with a physicality like this.’ His demeanor is innocent, but it’s encompassed in a six-foot-five frame. He could really do a lot of damage if this man really wanted to be a bad guy.”

Back in 2008, when del Toro first started working on his version of Frankenstein, he shared that he would not be doing a traditional adaptation of the novel. "I'm not doing 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein,'" he said at the time. “I'm doing an adventure story that involves the creature. I cannot say much, but it's not the central creation story; I'm not worried about that. The fact is I've been dreaming of doing a Frankenstein movie since I was a child. The one thing I can promise is, compared to Kenneth Branagh, I will not appear shirtless in the movie!”

With Netflix as its forever home now, del Toro's Frankenstein has come to fruition and though details about the plot are still being kept under wraps, it looks like it will be something close to the director's original idea since he has written, directed, and produced the project in tandem with J. Miles Dale, who also worked as a producer on Cabinet of Curiosities. In 2015, del Toro admitted the Mary Shelley novel was his "favorite book of all time," so it's safe to assume he approached the project with extensive knowledge and the utmost care.
