2024 Summer Olympics: A Guide to the Paris Games

Everything and everyone you need to know for the 2024 summer Olympics in Paris.

It's that time again: the summer Olympics are upon us, and they're bringing some fun, new energy. We'll enjoy one new sport and three fledgling ones during these summer Games — breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing — all of which “are closely associated with youth and reward creativity and athletic performance,” according to the Paris 2024 website. Skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing all appeared for the first time at the 2021 Games, and will return to cement their place at these Olympics. Karate, baseball, and softball, however, were dropped from the roster this time around.

When are the Olympics and where do they take place?

The 2024 summer Olympics will kick off with the opening ceremony on July 26 in Paris and will last 19 days. For the first time in summer Olympics history, the opening ceremony will not be held in a stadium, instead taking place along the Seine, the river that runs through the heart of Paris. Each national delegation will have a boat on which athletes will parade down the river, officially kicking off the Games. This year, 10,500 will participate in the opening ceremony.
