Based on E. Lockhart's 2014 bestselling novel of the same name and featuring the original author as both a writer and producer, We Were Liars is Prime Video's latest bet on the YA territory, following the success of Jenny Han's The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The first eight-episode season of We Were Liars follows the story of “The Liars,” led by Cadence “Cady” Sinclair Eastman (played by Gossip Girl alum Emily Alyn Lind) alongside her cousins and her best friend turned lover Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), the nephew of her aunt’s longtime partner. The show focuses on the Sinclairs' lavish summer at Beechwood Island, just off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, with more than one mystery to boot.

🚨 MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW 🚨

Season 1 of We Were Liars covers the events of two summers. In the first one, Cady returns to Beechwood Island to reunite with her cousins and realizes she has a crush on her best friend, Gat. Things soon turn steamy; however, Cady also suffers a mysterious accident that leaves her with memory loss.

The following summer, Cady comes back to the island determined to figure out the forgotten missing pieces that led to her accident and reunites with the Liars after a year of no contact, but nobody is willing to answer her questions.

In the final episode of the season, it is revealed that all of the Liars, minus Cady, had actually died the summer prior in a fire that burned down their beloved mansion, and our titular girl had been interacting with their ghosts this whole time.

The show ends on a cliffhanger as most of the Liars accept their fate, but Johnny Sinclair (Joseph Zada) is determined to haunt his mom Carrie (Mamie Gummer), who can also see his ghost form. The show finished with Cady running down the beach, seemingly leaving her family behind.

At the time of writing, Prime Video is yet to renew We Were Liars for a second season, though Vernon Sanders, the head of TV at Amazon MGM Studios, did confirm to Variety that a We Were Liars season 2 writers room was already in progress.

“We are working with the writers of We Were Liars on a second season writers room right now,” Sanders told the publication on July 28. 2025. “We haven’t announced the renewal quite yet, but we’re excited by the results we’ve seen of that show.”

Sanders added that there are currently writers rooms ongoing for not only We Were Liars, but also Motorheads and Overcompensating. He added: “Each show has a really passionate fanbase, and we’ve been really pleased by the completion rates … so we’re going to be in conversations with all three. All three shows are working on Season 2 writers rooms, and we’ll hope to have renewal announcements soon on some, if not all, of those shows.”

In just days since the first season's premiere, We Were Liars reached Prime Video's Top 10 shows list, claiming the top spot in over 20 countries. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2025, E. Lockhart hinted at the future of the show, saying: "I don’t have any news to share about season two yet. [But] it’s not a limited series!"

Speaking to Teen Vogue, Lind also teased that there's more to explore with Cady. “There's things that he can use over me for the rest of my life,” she said. "People died. That's a lot of baggage that she's leaving with. She's not leaving with her hands clean. Her hands have never been dirtier. None of her family knows.”

What could We Were Liars season 2 be about?

Speaking to TVLine, E. Lockhart teased that season 2 could very well delve into the events of her 2022 sequel book, Family of Liars, which follows the story of the older Sinclair sisters when they were teenagers in the late '80s.

“That final scene with Carrie and Johnny is very close to the opening of my second book in the We Were Liars universe,” she told the outlet. “Really, it’s a tip forward into season 2 — should we get a season 2 — but it’s also a tip forward to the book that comes after We Were Liars. We all hope for a season 2, and I know the showrunners have all kinds of plans.”

However, there's also a chance that the showrunners could continue the story from season 1, especially with Johnny sticking around.

Speaking to Variety, Lind also teased season 2 could focus on her journey after the events of season 1. “In life, a lot of people will pack up and leave their families, but that doesn’t mean they don’t bring baggage with them and secrets. So we will see, maybe season 2 will dive into that a little bit. I think the story hasn’t quite ended there,” she said.

Who could be in the cast of We Were Liars season 2?

This is the million-dollar question. Depending on whether We Were Liars season 2 continues the event from season 1 or adapts E. Lockhart's sequel, the cast could look very different. However, there's also a chance we could get a mix of the two, and flashbacks are never off the table. Speaking to Swooon, screenwriter and producer Carina Adly MacKenzie said: “We do love our present-day cast. We wouldn’t want them to go anywhere either.”

This post will be updated as news about We Were Liars season 2 breaks. We Were Liars season 1 is now available to stream on Prime Video.
