Wednesday Season 3 Gets Greenlight Before Season 2 Premiere — Everything You Need to Know

Wednesday season 2 is officially around the corner, Outcasts. In late 2022, everyone's favorite sadistic big sis finally got her own TV series with Netflix's Wednesday. The streamer's live-action series, all about Wednesday Addams of the Addams Family, came straight from the deliciously twisted mind of Tim Burton, becoming one of the most popular series in mere weeks. (It's currently the #1 most-viewed English language series in the studio’s history.) Since then, the countdown for season 2 has been on.

21-year-old Jenna Ortega is the latest actress to step into the black-and-white attire of Wednesday Addams, and her modern version of the character can definitely brush shoulders with Yellowjackets star Christina Ricci's beloved, iconic portrayal of Wednesday from the early ‘90s. The gothic, death-obsessed teen and her macabre-loving family are back in the spotlight, and we truly can’t get enough.

If you've watched season 1 of Netflix's Wednesday, you know that by the finale in episode eight, we receive many satisfying — and TBH, shocking — answers to the mysteries Wednesday is wrapped up in for the season's entire arc, but we're left with a lot of questions, too. No spoilers, but… will Tyler return after escaping custody? Is Wednesday still in danger? Who sent her that stalker-like text message? What will happen to Nevermore now that Principal Weems is dead?

Below, we've compiled a comprehensive guide to everything we know so far about Wednesday season 2, including the release date, plot details, cast information, trailer, and updates from the cast.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on July 23, 2025, Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega reportedly confirmed that Wednesday has been renewed for season 3 ahead of the premiere of season 2. Netflix confirmed the news shortly after via Tudum, unveiling a first look poster with Wednesday in front of a crystal ball with the number 3, held by Thing. You can see the poster below:

Our goal for Season 3 is the same as it is for every season: to make it the best season of Wednesday we possibly can,” Wednesday co-creator and showrunner Alfred Gough told Tudum. “We want to continue digging deeper into our characters while expanding the world of Nevermore and Wednesday.” Co-creator and co-showrunner Miles Millar added: “We will be seeing more Addams Family members and learning more family secrets in Season 3!”

THR noted that aside from an early renewal, the streamer also reportedly has a spinoff series in the works, though it's still “in early discussions.” Wednesday showrunner Alfred Gough said: “It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at." Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria added: “There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”

The showrunners had also previously teased their storytelling plans to continue the Wednesday universe. While speaking to TV Line in 2022, Millar and Gough revealed that they planned Wednesday storylines as far out as “four seasons."

“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters, and the actors are so amazing in those roles," Millar said. He also acknowledged that the show's focus on Wednesday Addams and her journey “to forge her own path outside the family is important," but that the writers' room would be “definitely” be interested in featuring more of the Addams family dynamic in future seasons.

“For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally," Millar also shared with Variety. "That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters. It can evolve and change. Often, you want to see which characters or cast pop and who you like to write for. So you want to keep it open and organic enough to change it and evolve, but we certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons.”

Netflix dropped the official trailer for Wednesday season 2 on July 9, 2025. The trailer, which you can watch above, kicks off with Wednesday and the whole Addams family making their return to Nevermore. “This is the first time you've ever willingly returned to a school. How does it feel?” Morticia asks her daughter. “Like returning to the scene of the crime. I already know where the bodies are buried.”

In the next scene, we see Wednesday dealing with her newfound celebrity status at school, and later reunite with her roommate and best friend, Enid Sinclair. However, it looks like her clairvoyant skills have developed (and now manifest with black tears), and she's having visions that Enid will die. And Morticia might know the key to the mystery.

At Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event on Saturday, May 31, the streamer unveiled the first six minutes of Wednesday season 2 episode 1. Directly after the new teaser aired, Wednesday season 2 guest star Lady Gaga performed a mashup of “Zombieboy," “Bloody Mary,” and “Abracadabra,” coming straight out of a coffin emblazoned with the words: Here Lies the Monster Queen. You can watch the first six minutes of the upcoming second season below.

Previously, Netflix had released the first official teaser for Wednesday season 2 on April 23, 2025. Set to an eerie version of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music, the teaser begins with Wednesday, clad in all black, undergoing a security check at Newark Airport. As she passes the metal detector, we hear a beep, and it's time for our titular sardonic to put her metal items aside — we are taking brass knuckles, flails, and machetes, not keys and coins. But what gets her stopped by TSA? Thing's sunscreen. (Gotta make sure to pack minis!)

In the next scene, we see the Addams family return to Jericho with Pugsley as a Nevermore student. We then see Wednesday reuniting with Enid in their dorm before all hell breaks loose — courtesy of some very creepy dolls. “Wherever there's murder and mayhem, you will always find an Addams,” Wednesday's voice proclaims. “Every family has secrets, Wednesday,” her mom replies, “and secrets can have deadly consequences.” And yes, that's Tyler back in his monster form confronting Wednesday. Wild ride, indeed.

Netflix also unveiled the official poster for Wednesday season 2 on April 22, 2025, ahead of the first official teaser trailer. The poster, which you can see below, shows Wednesday crying black tears while tied to a chair with Thing on her shoulder. “The wait has been torture,” the poster reads.

Yes! On May 20, Netflix released a new behind-the-scenes featurette that teases Wednesday season 2, featuring creator and showrunner duo Miles Millar and Alfred Gough and director Tim Burton, as well as much of the new and returning cast. The featurette revealed just how much more of the Addams Family we'll get to see this season as they join Wednesday at Nevermore.

“There really isn't a lot of Addams family lore, so we wanted to delve deeper into the family,” says Gough in the new video. “The scope has expanded in terms of character arcs,” added Millar.

And in terms of the murder and the mystery that kept season 1's plot churning? Oh, season 2 has lots in store for us. “Season 2 has everything people loved about season 1,” Hunter Doohan, who plays Tyler, chimed in. “It's kind of like we've turned the dial up on everything." Previously, Netflix announced the end of filming in December 2024 with a first-look pic of Jenna Ortega as Wednesday in season 2. In the pic, Ortega is seen with the character's trademark braided pigtails and impeccable curtain bangs, wearing a crisp collared white shirt with black opal buttons under a long-sleeved black dress and matching tights with a short black manicure to boot. She appears to be in the middle of what looks like a graveyard, flanked by two Grim Reaper-like cloaked figures holding out lamps instead of scythes. (What is our girl up to this year at Nevermore? Surely no good!)

To coincide with the release of the first trailer in April 2025, the streamer released a new batch of photos teasing what's to come, some of which correspond to moments in the trailer, including our first glimpse of Steve Buscemi as Barry Dort and Joanna Lumley as Grandmama. On May 14, as part of Netflix Upfront 2025, the streamer released another picture from the upcoming sophomore season, which is a family portrait of the full Addams family showing Morticia, Thing, Wednesday, Gomez, Grandmama Hester, Lurch, a still unknown character, Uncle Fester, and Pugsley. You can see the pic below:

To coincide with the release of the official trailer on July 9, Netflix also put ten more photos from the season. Most correspond to key moments in the trailer, but some also show us new characters in action. You can see them all below:

Back in January 2025, we got another glimpse at the Wednesday season 2 via Netflix's Hero 2025 video. At around the 1:20 minute mark, we get a flash vision that shows Tyler Galpin (played by Hunter Doohan) imprisoned at Willow Hill. The short clip sees Tyler shirtless and handcuffed to the wall of his cell as Wednesday seemingly enters the room to confront him, wearing a stunning cape coat over a crisp white shirt with a black tie because she's Wednesday, after all.

Previously, on September 19, 2024, Netflix released the first behind-the-scenes look at the second season in celebration of the platform's Geeked Week 2024. “Hello, my little storm cloud,” Luis Guzmán says to kick off the video, in full character as Wednesday's father, Gomez Addams. Viewers are then welcomed to the set of season 2 by Guzmán, Emma Myers, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Thing, and Joy Sunday.

“This season is going to be bigger and more twisted than you could ever imagine,” Zeta-Jones promises as we see Tim Burton commanding the set (bathed in police lights, might we add. *eye emojis*). There's so much to pause and unpack throughout the BTS video, including a scene in which Wednesday says “FIGHT!” with a thrusting fist in the air, onstage at what seems to be some kind of rally. With the release of the first teaser trailer, Netflix announced that Wednesday season 2 will be released in two parts in summer 2025. Part 1 will be released on August 6, 2025, and Part 2 will follow suit on September 3, 2025.

Netflix confirmed that Wednesday season 2 had officially begun production in Ireland in May 2024; Deadline had previously reported that Wednesday would be moving its filming location from its previous locale of Romania due to “logistical challenges." On December 4, 2024, Netflix confirmed that production for Wednesday season 2 had officially wrapped.

ICYMI: Wednesday season 1 debuted on Netflix on November 23, 2022, to popular and critical acclaim. The show broke record after record in its first full week on the streaming platform. Variety reported that Wednesday was watched for almost six billion minutes during its first five days available, becoming the second biggest week of streaming ever recorded by Nielsen, only behind Stranger Things 4. On January 6, 2023, Netflix announced the show's season 2 renewal with a mashup of clips from Season 1, videos of fans from around the world, and a new voiceover from Wednesday herself.

Wednesday has been called a unique mix of fantasy-horror-mystery-comedy, but has been described first and foremost as a coming-of-age series. The eight-episode first season followed Wednesday Addams' first year as a student at Nevermore Academy. The first chapter of Wednesday's story depicted her attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore. The Wednesday season 1 finale ended with multiple cliffhangers and a massive twist, so there's definitely more to explore — and many questions that need answering — in the second season.

The visual effects team for Wednesday told J-14 which characters they would like to explore more in the second season. At the top of that list? Thing. “I think it would be fantastic to explore what may have happened to lead him to be severed, possibly,” said Lon Molnar, co-president of the MARZ VFX team. They also expressed that they'd be excited to do “anything with that character front and center.”

“…We’re ready to take the helm and help him tell that story," said Molnar. "We’re open to anything.” MARZ VFX producer Casey Sincic shared that further developing Uncle Fester's character is also something the team would be interested in. "The work that we did with [Fred Armisen's] character was pretty minor,” said Sincic. “It was the electricity effects that he used, but I would love to see him be a bigger part of the show in Season 2.”

Series star Jenna Ortega also has some ideas about what she'd like to see from her character, Wednesday, in future seasons. “I kind of want her to be darker,” Ortega told Entertainment Tonight in November 2022. “I want her to get more in the nitty-gritty of things and not play things so safe, because there are a lot of lines about her saving the school and doing whatever, but for me, her main drive with the monster is competitiveness. Kind of, ‘Man, how’s this guy doing this?’”

“I think I want it to continue down an antihero stream rather than a typical hero," added Ortega. While guest-appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon back in March 2023, Ortega shared some exciting new details on the progress of season 2 and where the plot is headed.

“We just started getting a writers' room together and kind of talking about it, and everyone’s being really cool," said Ortega. "I think we want to up the horror aspect of it a little bit and then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation and just let her be her own individual and fight her own crime.”

In June 2023, Ortega spoke with fellow actor Elle Fanning for Variety's Actors on Actors series, and emphasized this point, saying: “We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more, because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously… we’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great."

On January 15, 2024, while speaking to E! on the red carpet ahead of the Emmys 2023, Ortega teased even more about the upcoming sophomore season and emphasized that our heroine doesn't really change, which is “the great thing about her.” “I've received some scripts for the second season," she said, noting how horror-heavy the tone was. "There’s really, really good one-liners, and I think everything’s bigger, it’s a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”

Elaborating on that comment, Ortega explained why the scale of Wednesday season 2 will also feel a lot bigger during Vanity Fair's 2024 Hollywood Issue interview. “In the first season, we had episodes that really stood out visually, like the dance episode was a really big one for people, and that setting was very particular and it felt like Prom Night, a little bit, or Carrie. Every episode [of season two] that I’ve read so far is like that,” the actor revealed. “It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I’m most excited for because to pull that off for eight episodes is, I think, really incredible and really lucky.”

Speaking to Collider in March 2025, Ortega went a step further and revealed Wednesday season 2 will feature “a whole episode based off of slashers.” She said: “Visually, I can say we have some of the most fun we've ever had. It's crazy to talk about one frame like this, but there is a frame of Pugsley rolling his eyes back with this contraption around his head — that's all I can say — and it reminds me so much of Full Metal Jacket. It's insane. So bizarre. I just feel like there are a lot of scenes and frames, and there's a whole episode based off of slashers, and we make a lot of horror references. So, everything about it, I feel like we kind of had a little bit more trust, and therefore, we felt like we could do bigger, more elaborate sequences, which is nice.”

Netflix previously revealed the title of the first episode of Wednesday season 2 in a new video, and it couldn't be more perfect. The premiere episode, written by Gough and Millar and directed by Tim Burton, is titled “Here We Woe Again.” We are READY!

In the most perfect casting in recent memory, Wednesday season 2 has gained an exciting new cast member, albeit for a brief amount of time: the one and only Lady Gaga.

On November 13, 2024, a source confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Lady Gaga would appear in an undisclosed role in season 2 and was filming for the show in Ireland. Variety quickly confirmed that Gaga's role is on the smaller side, a cameo — sources told the outlet “that the [Wednesday] production team had tried to get Gaga on the show for a larger role in season 2, but that ultimately did not work out.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in March 2025, Gaga teased her involvement in the show and chemistry with Ortega. “I don’t want to give away anything about being part of the show. I want to keep it extra secret — but I love Jenna, and I really had an amazing time!" she said.

In 2023, Jenna Ortega herself foreshadowed Gaga appearing on the show while speaking to Variety at the Golden Globes. “I’m sure Netflix would love that,” Ortega said. "Miss Thornhill and Wednesday had this weird kind of mentor relationship or understood each other in a certain way, so if Lady Gaga were to be a part of [Wednesday], they’d have to be two monsters who understand each other.”

In December 2022, Lady Gaga recreated the viral Wednesday dance on TikTok, set to her own song “Bloody Mary.” Talk about a full-circle moment, huh? No matter the capacity, we love the fact that Mother Monster has now become a fellow Monster.

Previously, in May 2024, Netflix confirmed that “more torture awaits” with even more familiar faces in a spooky cast reveal video with a bit of help from Thing. The streamer confirmed the previously announced additions of Thandiwe Newton and Steve Buscemi, as well as unveiling the casting of Billie Piper, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, Noah Taylor, Frances O'Connor, Joanna Lumley, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, Joonas Suotamowill, and original Addams Family actor Christopher Lloyd, who played Uncle Fester in the 1991 film.

Lumley will be playing Grandmama, Buscemi will play Barry Dort, Piper will portray Capri, and Newton will take on the role of Dr. Fairburn. “Our goal this season was to discover some fresh faces as well as invite some acting legends we’ve always admired to join Jenna and the gang at Nevermore,” Wednesday co-showrunners Miles Millar and Al Gough exclusively told Tudum. “When we survey the talent we’ve assembled, we could not be more thrilled. Mission accomplished.”

Jenna Ortega had teased the literal dozen new cast additions in her cover story for Vanity Fair's 2024 Hollywood Issue earlier this year. “Reading scripts has been exciting, seeing all of the new characters that are coming in," the actor shared. “We’re definitely expanding on the supernatural world. Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires and da-ta-da. And I think we expand on that a little bit.”

Outside of the titular main character, the returning cast of Wednesday includes newly-upped series regulars Catherine Zeta-Jones as Addams Family matriarch Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday's little brother Pugsley, Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, and Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo as Deputy Ritchie Santiago.

Also confirmed to return are Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin), Fred Armisen (Uncle Fester), Jamie McShane (Sheriff Galpin), and Moosa Mostafa (Eugene Otinger). Notably missing from both the new cast photo released by Netflix (included above) and the announcement are actors Naomi J. Ogawa (who played Yoko Tanaka, and Percy Hynes White. White, who played Xavier Thorpe in season 1, faced allegations of sexual assault in 2023; per Variety, he publicly denied the claims, calling the allegations a “campaign of misinformation.”

It's unclear whether Christina Ricci will return as Marilyn Thornhill/Laurel Gates. The season 1 finale was particularly shocking Ricci's dual characters; it seemed as though Laurel had met her demise, with her villain storyline coming to an end after she is attacked by bees and dies. But… did Laurel really die?

While speaking to Entertainment Tonight in March 2023, Ricci hinted that she could possibly return for Wednesday season 2. “I don't think I'm allowed to say,” said Ricci when asked for confirmation of her involvement in the second season. “On my end, the door is open. She was so fun to play! It's always so fun to play a villain.”
