How to shop for a face wash if you struggle with acne
“A good skincare routine is so important for those with acne-prone skin,” says dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD. “Look for face washes with salicylic acid which will help with oil and dirt in the pores. It's really beneficial for both blackheads and whiteheads. It's also great for breaking down dead skin and is a great exfoliant.” Benzoyl peroxide, although drying, can also help fight acne.
As you’re browsing the shelves, also keep an eye out for the buzzword non-comedogenic, a dermatologist-beloved phrase that means the product won’t clog your pores. And, finally, sample the product's texture, if possible. “Anything overly thick and creamy as you want to look for light weight formulations. I would also avoid fragrances, which tend to be more harsh on the skin,” says Dr. Chacon.
How to use the best face wash for acne?
How you wash your face also matters, says David Kim, MD, board-certified dermatologist at IDRISS Dermatology in New York City. He recommends washing your face twice a day (morning and night) if you’re severely acne-prone or once a day (in the evening) if you have mild acne. When it comes time to cleanse your face, Dr. Kim recommends taking a gentle approach. “It's very important as you don't want to over-strip your skin. Your skin will think that it's dry and will overcompensate by producing more oil,” he explains. “That squeaky clean feeling does not mean you have cleansed your skin well. This means you've over-stripped your skin, and you need to find a gentler cleanser.”
